When I open "text" files created by other word processors that are written in Japanese fonts, the characters don't get converted right. They get garbled and I can't reformat the text into the original font. How can I avoid this problem?

When I open "text" files created by other word processors that are written in Japanese fonts, the characters don't get converted right. They get garbled and I can't reformat the text into the original font. How can I avoid this problem? 

To avoid this problem you can, follow these steps... Open the preferences dialog, and select the default pane. Choose a Japanese font in the font popup. Now import. or... To reformat to the original font. Mariner Write uses "smart" font replacement, when changing fonts the language script must match. You override this by holding the option key down when selecting a font.
