What is a character interlude?

A character interlude is a moment when the character realizes the enormity of both what's happened and what still needs to happen in order to be successful.  It's often a scene where the character takes stock of their situation, and if they're going to quit...then would be the last possible time.

It's a moment of reflection and/or admission of feelings long suppressed or unexpressed.   Luke not believing that Obi-Wan is gone...John McClane telling Sgt. Powell to find his wife and tell her that he loves her...Rose being lowered in the lifeboat and seeing Jack and Cal standing side-by-side on the deck.
