Is hosting a Paperless library on a network drive supported?

Currently, we only support using a Paperless library on a local drive or Dropbox. This means that the following are not supported:

  • Using a Paperless library hosted on a network (or shared) drive--accessible, for example on a LAN file share or over a Wide Area Network (such as the Internet) over protocols like FTP, SFTP, AFP, or SMB.

It is possible to use a Paperless library that is hosted on a network-accessible drive, however doing so increases the risk of any of the following:

  • Corruption of library data.

  • Slow performance when entering metadata or otherwise using Paperless.

  • Failure of Paperless to quit unless using force quit.

  • Inability to open a library that is located on a network share.

Due to the risk of any of these things, we do not currently support using a Paperless library on a network drive. We are currently exploring the possibility of supporting solutions that allow users to use Paperless libraries not hosted on the local machine. We look forward to supporting solutions in future releases of Paperless. Because using Paperless libraries is not supported (and because of the potential hazards associated with this, as listed above), we unfortunately are not able to provide workarounds for this currently.
